Liposuction today comes in many forms including “traditional" mechanical Liposuction, Ultrasonic Liposuction, and Laser Liposuction. Traditional mechanical liposuction refers to the use of a cannula (or tube) to remove fat by “scraping” and suctioning the fat out of a given body area. Ultrasonic Liposuction, such as Vaser, utilizes a probe instead of a cannula to rupture fat cells with the power of Ultrasonic energy. The ruptured fat cells are then removed from the area using suction. The latest, most advanced form of Liposuction is Laser Lipolysis, which has, over the last decade, become one of the most sought after forms of Liposuction worldwide due to the fact that it is typically safer, does not require any general anesthesia, delivers better results, and produces the least amount of downtime.

Devices for performing Laser Lipolysis are currently marketed under different brand names such as SmartLipo and SlimLipo, which are some of the better known brands available. The SmartLipo device was one of the first devices available in the United States and quickly rose in popularity as a result. Soon after the launch of SmartLipo, SlimLipo was introduced to the market and, just as quickly, replaced many of the SmartLipo devices on the market. SlimLipo offers several important features unique to SlimLipo that make it one of the very best forms of Liposuction available today. To name a few, it is the only device FDA approved for skin tightening and it utilizes a patented form of Laser energy that maximizes fat removal while minimizing damage to other tissues.

The SlimLipo procedure basically consists of three steps, all performed in the time span of approximately 2 hours with the patient wide awake: 1) The body area is locally numbed using Lidocaine solution (no general anesthesia required), 2) The Laser is used to melt the fat and tighten the skin, and 3) The melted fat is removed using suction. The entire procedure is performed through tiny incisions in the skin, typically 2mm in size. After the procedure, patients can return immediately to most normal daily activities. Many patients even return to work the very next day.
